2. Tours: Walk or Ride

Our Maldon Rediscovered ‘app’ presents walks around Maldon’s historic central area using historical and current images, plus snippets of local history from our archives to tell the stories of each place. To access the walking tours simply click here to start your tour now.

The initial tours were produced in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the town’s declaration as Australia’s first ‘Notable Town’.

The ‘app’ is internet-based so there is nothing to download before you start, and it’s always up to date. The tours are intended for mobile devices, however the content is viewable on any computer so you can take a virtual tour at any time. These tours are developed and maintained by Maldon Museum & Archives volunteers. The website url is https://tours.maldonmuseum.com.au

Walk MALDON booklet. Explore some of our unique gold-mining landscapes within the Maldon Historic Reserve and heritage Maldon township, where there are many fascinating gold-mining sites right at our doorsteps. Maldon is not only Australia’s First Notable Town (classified by the National Trust) but enjoys the pleasure of being encircled by spectacular natural bush lands that contain abundant cultural and natural heritage.

Discover some of our many gold mine relics and historic features on three individual, self-guided walking tracks. All three tracks begin and end near the centre of town; an easy walk from the cafes. Otherwise, there is ample parking at the Beehive Chimney or along High St. (refer to the map at the front of the booklet). The booklet is available for download as a PDF file here.

Do one or do them all, each has unique highlights. Each walking track is a loop and (mostly) an easy-moderate level, approx. 2.5 km long and takes a leisurely 1.5 hours. All you need are good walking shoes, a hat and drinking water. Dogs are welcome, on a lead at all times, in the Maldon Historic Reserve.

Each route has unique highlights, with points of interest and suggested picnic spots along the way. Each route is a loop and (mostly) an easy-moderate level, and designed to be fun and leisurely. There are two short and two longer routes, suitable for novice and regular riders. The routes include both sealed and gravel roads and a hybrid, mountain or gravel bike is recommended.
