HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2016 – MALDON REDISCOVERED
Join us as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Maldon being declared a ‘Notable Town’ by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).
Discovery and rediscovery are integral to Maldon’s character. The wealth of Maldon’s remarkably intact gold-rush era buildings, streetscapes and historic mining landscapes can now be rediscovered and experienced by all thanks to the heritage conservation work commenced 50 years ago.
Our special exhibition revisits the beginnings of heritage conservation in Victoria and the highs and lows of living and working with ‘notability’.
The exhibition will be held at the Maldon District Museum which is housed in Maldon’s historic former Market House building, an architectural treasure in its own right.
MALDON MUSEUM 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Easter 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of the opening of what is now Maldon District Museum. (Opening date was 8th April 1966.)
The museum held its grand opening weekend at Easter 1966 just months after Maldon had been declared Australia’s first Notable Town by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). At that time the Victorian Government was encouraging this type of venture as a way to boost tourism to small country towns.
When the call went out for donations of anything old for display in the museum Maldon residents took up the challenge.
The Maldon District Museum and its volunteers have experienced a great many changes since 1966 and we invite you to share the journey with us over Easter 2016.
EASTER PROCESSION PICTORIAL – 1950 to 1980
Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Entry is free.
All the fun and glamour of the Easter Procession is reflected in the colour slides taken by local residents and which now form part of the Maldon image collection. The procession has always been a highlight of Maldon’s Easter Fair. The floats are usually quite topical and often humorous, and always the subject of a great deal of planning, design and many hours of decoration by the entrants.
Our Easter Procession Pictorial was such a hit with the community last year we just had to do it again. This year we have a super selection of new slides including some colour slides from 1950 and others up to 1980.
You are invited to come along, relive old memories and help our volunteers to identify the people and organisations represented. Also let us know if you have old slides or photographs which we could copy or you would like to donate to our collection. As slides arrive our volunteers digitise them so that they can be used to produce large colour prints and slideshows for your enjoyment.
AUSTRALIA DAY 2016 – OPEN HOUSE
The community is invited to visit the Maldon District Museum after Maldon’s Australia Day Ceremony in the Shire Gardens on Tuesday 26th January.
Entry is free.
This special opening day will be an ideal opportunity to view the results of the recent building works and re-establish a connection with this most important community organisation as we approach our 50th anniversary.
